(Lots and lots of) Kids n' History

Thursday June 6th, two groups of kids (for a total of 57!) came to the museum to see some of the artifacts of the history of the Tillamook Passage they've recently studied.  The first group were fourth graders from Neskowin and they were joined by two wonderful United States Coast Guard volunteers, Brandon and Amber who provided a tour of the Coast Guard facility then took them to lunch:

They looked at all the intricate models...

They figured out how to put together a wooden bucket. That's blurry Brandon
and Amber the USCG volunteers, getting in on the bucket action too.

They tried on the period clothing...

And scrutinized the cutaway ship for all the details of life at sea...

Then they tried on more 18th century clothing.

An hour after the Neskowin kids arrived, the middle school gang from Oregon City arrived.

The ship cut away was a big draw for the older kids.

As were the period hats and clothes.

The puzzle of the wooden bucket engaged this bunch too!

And if there's a bell, ya gotta ring it, right?

Some enjoyed the period clothes more than others.

But that ship cut away was a HUGE draw.

Many were fascinated by the firearms collection of the museum's founder Charles Parkin.

Oh what to do? Cannon, bucket, cannon, bucket!

Our wonderful museum director Anna, greeted the kids in period costume, and was only moderately affected by the noise level of all that energy!

The open house was attended by many who came to see the bus in all its glory (inside and out). The process of getting the graphics onto the bus was described by the bus marketing director.  Everyone was snapping photos!

Call for Volunteers

Do you have an extra hour or two a week?  Or month?  Could we use your help?  Well SURE!!

We  need volunteers who enjoy gardening to help maintain our planted areas in the front of the museum, someone with a blower to clear off the parking lot once a month or when called (we do have that pesky wind here), and people who  enjoy the museum/gallery atmosphere and interacting with the public who would enjoy being the welcoming face behind the lobby desk at the Museum, during business hours, for an hour or two a week.

The museum is closed for the winter months of December, January, and February, but help from a few willing hands would be so welcome for the months we are open.  Interested?

Click on the link to e mail us and request a: Volunteer Application

2014 Call for artists on the Northern Oregon Coast

Do you paint, draw, sculpt or make any kind of visually stimulating art?  Would you be interested in having a show at the Museum next year?  We're currently seeking  local artists (second home on the Oregon Coast or past resident  qualifies) to embellish the walls of our community room and provide exposure to our local talent in a quiet gallery atmosphere each month, and would love to see your work.

Do you know any other artists who would like to do a show?  Tell them you saw this or let us know who they are!

Submit at least 4 examples of your work in .jpg format to: Artist Call at GMM and request a copy of the Artist Contract.

United Paws Adoption Event

United Paws Adoptathon
May 4th, 2013
12:00 – 3:00pm

The day was warm and sunny, but the cats were cool as they put on their cutest poses trying to find a loving family to adopt them. United Paws arrived with 12 cats all looking for a home where they can just be part of the family. Four of them found a forever home, eight will try again next time. The event was well attended by 17 people looking to just make a little difference in the day of a homeless feline.  The donated gift basket was also a big hit. It brought in $50 in proceeds to PAWS!

But wait - there's more! Much, much more!

Give yourself at least 2 hours to enjoy the Garibaldi Maritime Museum.  There's a lot to see: Garibaldi history, a boat building display, a Children's Korner, an exquisite historical gun collection (yes, even if you're not a gun person).  You owe it to yourself to tour this gem - especially if you're a coastal resident and have never been here. Click on any photo for a larger view.
